2. John Carpenter and Wyndham Halswelle, 1904 Olympics
Another major controversy in the 1904 Olympics took place during the men’s 400m race. After American runner, John Carpenter, had blocked British runner, Wyndham Halswelle, Carpenter was disqualified from the race. This type of block, while illegal in the UK was legal in the United States at the time, and the US was therefore outraged.
